I hope you have had a good summer. I have met with Richard and we are both looking forward to the first rehearsal of the new season next Monday. We will meet around 6:45 for a social gathering in the lobby of the gym to welcome back all GCB members and those who are coming to play with us for the first time. In addition to a few new people, I am expecting a few who were not able to play with us for some or all of last year. Please bring a little food to share if you are able. I will bring plates and cups and will ask some to bring drinks.

Below are some the new pieces I would like to get through Monday night.

Prospect

American Folk Rhapsody

Mr. Everest

I’m Feelin’ Fine

Just a Closer Walk

John Williams in Concert

Second Suite in F by Holst

I wanted to let everyone know that the wind ensemble that played at the Coca-Cola Collector’s Convention did a fantastic job. The convention organizer said it was just what she was hoping for and donated $325 to the band for our participation.

Again, I am looking forward to seeing you.

Jack Randall

Gwinnett Community Band to perform at Memorial Day concert in Suwanee

SUWANEE — For the eighth consecutive year, the Gwinnett Daily Post will host a patriotic concert to help kick off the county’s Memorial Day celebrations.

This year’s edition of the Memorial Day Weekend Concert starts at 7 p.m. Friday (5/27) at Town Center Park in Suwanee. The free event will feature the Gwinnett Community Band performing patriotic marches and other popular favorites. “The evening will be very patriotic,” Daily Post publisher J.K. Murphy said. “It’s a great way to kick off this weekend that is dedicated to our men and women who have died serving their country.”

A nonprofit group of adult musicians from throughout the metro Atlanta area, the Gwinnett Community Band was established in 1984 and has performed at sites like the Gwinnett Civic Center, the World Congress Center and Stone Mountain Park, as well as at conferences in St. Louis and Gainesville, Fla. The group has performed at the Memorial Day Weekend Concert in years past, Murphy said.

Weather permitting, the Silver Wings — a command exhibition parachute team from the U.S. Army Infantry — will drop in to Town Center Park at approximately 7:30 p.m. Per annual tradition, canned good donations on behalf of area food co-ops will be accepted in lieu of admission. Parking will be available at Town Center Park, located at the intersection of Buford Highway and Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road, and across the railroad tracks on Main Street. Attendees are suggested to bring picnic baskets, blankets and chairs.

SPRING CONCERT SEASON CONTINUES

GCB has had a busy spring concert season. The annual GCB/LDS community concert was a smash success with the band sounding better than ever! We got rave reviews and honored outgoing conductor Ron Brooks for his many years of contribution in leading GCB. We played Delmar Gardens on May 4th and Barefoot in the Park on May 7th. The “Barefoot” concert was dedicated in memoriam of our clarinetist, Terry Akridge. We give tribute to this great lady who so generously gave of her talent and resources for so many years to GCB. The band was richer for her contributions; we’ll leave a chair open for her.

Next up is the GCB concert at Clairmont Oaks on May 23rd and the Suwanee Memorial Day concert on May 27th. Keep your horns tuned and polished, and your band shirts clean!

See you at rehearsal on Monday nite (May 9th).

I hope everyone’s new year is off to a good start. At this time it sounds like we will have two to six inches of snow Monday morning. If this happens school will be canceled and we will not be able to practice until the 24th.

At the next two rehearsals we will pass out a lot of pieces to add to your folder.

If schools are not closed Monday and we are able to practice, I hope to get through the list below along with several marches on concert size manuscript that we are considering in order to replace the small march size music.

Again, we will not rehearse on the 17th because it is MLK Day. The following rehearsal will be on the 24th. I’m hoping the weather Monday is not a problem and that we can practice Monday, but if not I’ll see you on the 24th.
